GitHub

Repos, issues, pull requests and Actions; push files as one commit.

The GitHub connector lets Mel's agent work in your GitHub account: read repositories, issues, pull requests and Actions runs, search code, open and merge pull requests, comment, create a repository and push files. It runs on your own GitHub token, and what Mel writes appears as you.

Recording needed: the GitHub connector in Settings ▸ Connectors, then an approval card for a push_files call

Connect it

  1. Create a GitHub token. A fine-grained personal access token works; give it access to the repositories you want Mel to use, with the permissions for what you'll ask (for example Contents and Pull requests: Read and write).
  2. In Mel, open Settings ▸ Connectors, find GitHub and click Connect.
  3. Paste the token and click Save and connect.

The token is stored on your computer; each call you approve carries it through Mel's server, which forwards it to the service and does not store it.

What the agent can do

AreaTools
RepositoriesList and read repos, branches, commits, releases and files; search repos and code
IssuesList, search, read, create and update issues; read and add comments
Pull requestsList and read pull requests, their files and diff; open one; merge one
ActionsList workflow runs; re-run a workflow
Writing codeCreate a repository; push files as one commit

Pushing files

push_files writes text files to a branch as one commit: it creates or replaces each file, deletes the paths you name, and then moves the branch. It's all or nothing, and the branch is never force-moved.

Caps per call: at most 100 files and 512 KB of file text in total, and at most 100 deletions. A larger project is several calls, one commit each. Text files only, no images or other binary files.

For a project already set up with git on your computer, git push in the terminal is simpler. push_files is for a computer with no git credential for GitHub.

Without the connector

If the GitHub CLI (gh) is signed in on your computer, you can just ask: Mel runs gh commands, which go through the normal command approval.

Limitations

  • Mel can only reach what your token can. A fine-grained token limited to a few repositories keeps it to those.
  • A file over 1 MB can't be read through the API; Mel says so and points to the raw URL.

FAQ

Does every GitHub call stop for my approval? Yes. Every connector call shows an approval card with its arguments, and connectors have no "always allow".

Who is the author of what Mel writes? You. Commits, comments and pull requests are made with your token.

See Connectors for how connectors work in general.
