What is an AI terminal?
By Lalla Asmaa Alaoui, founder of Mel · Updated
An AI terminal is a terminal app with AI built in, so plain English becomes commands that are written, explained or fixed. The most advanced kind hands whole tasks to agents that run the commands themselves.
The terminal is where developers build, test, deploy and debug, and it has always been the least forgiving tool on the desk: exact syntax, cryptic errors, flags you look up every time. AI changes that in steps, and it helps to know which step a tool is on.
The three kinds of AI terminal
Suggest. Type a sentence, get a command. You read it and run it.
Explain and fix. The terminal reads a failed command's output, explains what went wrong and proposes the fix.
Act. You describe an outcome and agents carry out the steps: run commands, edit files, run tests, read results and keep going. This is an agentic terminal, and it is where the biggest time savings, and the biggest need for control, are.
AI shell: the same idea at the prompt
An AI shell is a command-line shell, or a layer on top of one, that understands plain English. You type "find all files over 100 MB in this folder" and get find . -size +100M. A good AI shell shows the command before it runs, explains failures, and runs on top of your existing shell, so your aliases and tools still work.
AI command line: a guest in your terminal, or part of it
An AI command line puts an AI model behind the prompt. It reaches you in two ways. A command-line tool you run inside your terminal: you install a program, type its name, and talk to it. A terminal app with AI built in: the whole terminal is AI-aware, your normal shell plus agents. The difference is whether the AI is a guest in your terminal or part of it.
Terminal coding agent: the "act" level for code
A terminal coding agent is an AI agent you run from the command line inside your project folder. It reads your code, edits files, runs commands and tests, and reports back. Claude Code from Anthropic, Codex CLI from OpenAI and Gemini CLI from Google are the big-company options; OpenCode and Aider are popular open source ones. Each is a CLI tool you start inside your terminal, and each runs fine inside Mel.

How Mel does it
Mel sits at the "act" level.
- Hand over a task to a team of agents that plans, builds, tests and ships it.
- Your shell stays yours. Normal commands run as they always did.
- CLI agents run inside it: Claude Code, Codex CLI, Gemini CLI and Aider work in Mel's terminal.
- Coming soon: Mel on iPhone, iPad and in the browser.
How the kinds compare

| Plain English to commands | No | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Explains and fixes errors | No | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Does multi-step work itself | No | No | Yes | Yes, a team of agents |
| Edits files and runs tests | No | No | Yes | Yes |
| Your normal shell in the same window | Yes | Yes | Yes, around the tool | Yes |
| Model choice | n/a | Varies | Usually the maker's models | Claude, GPT, Gemini, DeepSeek, Qwen |
Getting the most from any AI terminal
- Be specific: name the folder, the file and the expected result.
- Read before you run, especially anything that deletes, moves or uses
sudo. - Start agents on a clean git tree, so the diff shows only their work.
- Say what "done" means: the command that must pass.
FAQ
What is an AI terminal? A terminal app with AI built in: plain-English commands, error help and, in the agentic kind, agents that do the work.
What is an AI shell? A shell, or a layer on top of one, that understands plain English and suggests, explains or runs the matching commands.
What is an AI command line? A command line with an AI model behind the prompt. It can be a CLI tool inside your terminal, or a terminal app with AI built in, like Mel.
What is a terminal coding agent? An AI agent you run from the command line in your project, which edits code, runs commands and tests. Claude Code, Codex CLI and Gemini CLI are examples, and they run inside Mel's terminal too.
Is Mel free? Yes, with your own API key on Mac, Windows and Linux. Pro and Max add hosted credits.
Is Mel on iPhone or in the browser? Not yet. Both are coming soon.
