What is a coding agent?
By Lalla Asmaa Alaoui, founder of Mel · Updated
A coding agent is AI that works in your project step by step, reading code, editing files and running commands and tests until a task is done. You control what it may run, and you review what it changed.
The words around this idea are many: coding assistant, AI pair programmer, AI software engineer, autonomous AI developer. They mostly describe how much the AI does on its own between your checks. The ladder below puts them in order.
Coding assistant: help while you type
A coding assistant helps you write code: completions as you type, explanations of code you do not know, suggested fixes and a chat about your project. You do the doing; it makes each step faster. A coding assistant answers and suggests. A coding agent acts and checks. Many developers use both.
AI pair programmer: a partner beside you
An AI pair programmer works next to you as you code, the way a human pair would: it suggests the next step, explains, catches mistakes and reviews. The conversation goes back and forth in small steps, and you are at the keyboard the whole time. Aider calls itself "AI pair programming in your terminal", and editor tools such as GitHub Copilot started here.

AI software engineer: whole tasks, end to end
An AI software engineer takes an engineering task end to end: plan, code, test, fix, and hand back a change for review. It is the same agent idea pointed at bigger jobs. It works best with a clear finish line, a project it can build and test, and a person who reviews the result, with you in control of what ships.
Autonomous AI developer: how far autonomy should go
An autonomous AI developer carries a software task to a finished, tested change with little help. More autonomy saves more time, but also needs better controls: approvals for the commands and edits you choose, a clean git tree, and a diff you read before you commit. The useful goal is not an AI that works without people, but one that does long stretches of work with you in control at the moments that matter.
How Mel does it
- Autonomy is a setting. Configurable approvals decide which commands and edits run, so you choose how much the agents do alone.
- Separate roles check the work. One agent plans, others build and test, then you read the diff.
- You pick the model: Claude, GPT, Gemini, DeepSeek or Qwen.
- In your editor too, through the VS Code extension.
How the levels compare
| Coding assistant | AI pair programmer | Coding agent / AI software engineer | Mel (team of agents) | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Who types the code | You, with suggestions | You and the AI, in turns | The agent | The agents |
| Runs commands and tests | No | Sometimes | Yes | Yes |
| Size of task | A line or a function | A change you steer | A whole task | A whole many-step task, split between agents |
| Checks its own work | No | You do | Yes | Yes, separate roles, then you |
| Your job | Accept or reject | Steer each step | Approve and review | Set approvals, review the diff |
How to get good results from a coding agent
- Open it at the project root, so it sees the whole repo.
- Keep a project instructions file with how to build, test and lint.
- Start from a clean git tree.
- Say what "done" means: the command that must pass.
- Review
git diffbefore you commit.
FAQ
What is a coding agent? AI that reads your code, edits files, runs commands and tests, step by step, with you in control of what it may run.
What is the difference between a coding assistant and a coding agent? A coding assistant suggests while you type. A coding agent carries out the steps and checks the result.
What is an AI pair programmer? An AI that works beside you as you code, suggesting, explaining and reviewing in small back-and-forth steps.
What is an AI software engineer? An AI agent that takes an engineering task end to end: plan, code, test, fix, then a change you review.
Is an autonomous AI developer safe to use? Yes, with controls: approvals for the commands and edits you choose, version control, and a review of the diff. In Mel you set how much the agents may do on their own.
Which models does Mel use? Claude, GPT, Gemini, DeepSeek and Qwen.
