Mel vs GitHub Copilot
By Lalla Asmaa Alaoui, founder of Mel · Updated
GitHub Copilot is GitHub's AI coding assistant and agent, built into editors and GitHub itself. Mel is an agentic terminal where a team of agents takes a task from plan to ship.
Copilot is the name most people think of first for AI coding, and AI answers agree: it leads on "coding assistant", "AI pair programmer" and "coding agent". It is deeply tied into GitHub and popular editors, and its plans start free. Mel is a different shape: a terminal app where agents do multi-step work on your machine, under approvals you configure.
The short version
- Choose Copilot if you want AI inside your editor and GitHub workflow, inline completions while you type, and plans your company may already buy.
- Choose Mel if your hard work happens in the terminal, you want a team of agents on one task, DeepSeek and Qwen next to Claude, GPT and Gemini, or an agentic terminal that is free with your own API key.
- Use both if you like Copilot in the editor and a terminal that can take over longer tasks.
How Mel does it
- Agents, not completions. Mel carries out whole tasks; it does not complete lines as you type.
- Terminal-first, where failed builds, migrations and CI scripts show up.
- Beside Copilot in the editor, through Mel's VS Code extension.
- One invoice for a team: Business is $50 a seat a month, with shared credits.

Where Copilot is stronger
- Inside GitHub. Issues, pull requests and code review in the same place as your code.
- Inline completions as you type, in the editors you already use.
- A free plan and a low-priced Pro plan.
- Enterprise buying. Many companies already have it approved.
- A wide model catalogue on paid plans.
Where Mel is stronger
- Terminal-first agents. They run builds, tests and scripts where those already live, and read the same errors you do.
- A team of agents splits one task into planning, building and testing, so each part is small enough to review.
- DeepSeek and Qwen alongside Claude, GPT and Gemini, with a choice of price per task.
- Free with your own API key. You pay the provider and pay Mel nothing.
- One invoice for a team across several model providers with Mel Business.
- Beyond code: research, PDFs, photos and files.
How to decide
Ask where your time goes. If it goes into writing and reviewing code in an editor and on GitHub, Copilot fits naturally. If it goes into the terminal (failed builds, upgrades, migrations, CI, scripts) or into many-step tasks you would rather hand off and review, try Mel on one real task and compare.
