Mel vs Claude Code

By Lalla Asmaa Alaoui, founder of Mel · Updated

Claude Code is Anthropic's coding agent, built for Claude models and used from the terminal, IDEs and a desktop app. Mel is an agentic terminal whose team of agents also works with GPT, Gemini, DeepSeek and Qwen.

Claude Code is the tool AI answers name first for terminal coding agents, and it deserves the spot. It is a strong agent, runs on macOS, Windows and Linux, has IDE extensions and a desktop app, and supports sub-agents for splitting work. If you only want Claude and you already pay for a Claude plan, it is an excellent choice.

Mel is for people who want the same kind of agent work with more than one model company, in a terminal app built around a team of agents.

The short version

  • Choose Claude Code if you want Anthropic's own agent, tuned for Claude, and your Claude Pro or Max plan already covers it.
  • Choose Mel if you want to use GPT, Gemini, DeepSeek or Qwen next to Claude, want an AI terminal rather than a CLI inside one, or want it free with your own API key.

How Mel does it

  • Claude plus four more model families: GPT, Gemini, DeepSeek and Qwen.
  • The terminal itself, not a CLI you start inside one.
  • Claude Code runs inside Mel if you want to keep it.
  • Free with your own API key; Pro and Max include hosted credits.

Where Claude Code is stronger

  • Tuned for Claude. One company builds both the model and the agent.
  • Breadth of surfaces. CLI, IDE extensions for VS Code and JetBrains, and a desktop app.
  • Ecosystem. Many guides, examples and community answers.
  • Included in plans many people already pay for.

Where Mel is stronger

  • Model choice. Claude, GPT, Gemini, DeepSeek and Qwen in one place, so you can pick by task and price, or get a second model's review.
  • A terminal, not a guest in one. Mel is your terminal: run normal commands, hand bigger work to the agents.
  • Free with your own API key. You pay the provider directly and pay Mel nothing.
  • Team billing. Mel Business has shared credits and one invoice across model providers.
  • Beyond code. The same agents handle research, PDFs, photos and files.

Using both

Many developers will. Claude Code is a CLI, so it runs in any terminal, including Mel. You can keep Claude Code for Claude-heavy work and use Mel's team of agents with other models when a task suits them.
