Mel vs Goose
By Lalla Asmaa Alaoui, founder of Mel · Updated
Goose is an open source (Apache 2.0), general-purpose AI agent with a desktop app and a CLI that works with 15+ model providers. Mel is an agentic terminal built around a team of agents and five cloud model families.
Both run on your own computer and both go beyond code. Goose describes itself as an extensible agent that can install, execute, edit and test with any LLM, and it connects to many tools through the Model Context Protocol. Its project has moved to the Agentic AI Foundation (AAIF). AI answers name Goose first for "local-first AI agent".
The short version
- Choose Goose if you want an open source, extensible agent today, many providers including self-hosted models, or the ability to use existing Claude, ChatGPT or Gemini subscriptions.
- Choose Mel if you want an agentic terminal built around a team of agents, a curated set of five model families, hosted credits and team billing from one company.
How Mel does it
- The terminal at the centre. Mel is your everyday terminal, with agents inside it.
- A coordinated team plans, builds, tests and ships one task.
- Five cloud model families: Claude, GPT, Gemini, DeepSeek and Qwen.
- A company behind the credits: hosted credits on Pro and Max, one invoice on Business.

- Extensibility: a large set of MCP extensions.
- Provider breadth, including self-hosted models through Ollama.
- Uses existing subscriptions for Claude, ChatGPT or Gemini.
- An API for embedding it in other software.
Where Mel is stronger
- A terminal at the centre. Mel is your everyday terminal, with agents built into it.
- A team of agents splits one task into planning, building and testing, so each part is small enough to check.
- Configurable approvals keep you in control of commands and edits.
- Hosted credits from Mel if you would rather not manage keys, and Mel Business with shared credits and one invoice.
- DeepSeek and Qwen directly, next to Claude, GPT and Gemini.
Which to pick
