What is a multi-model coding agent?
By Lalla Asmaa Alaoui, founder of Mel · Updated
A multi-model coding agent is a coding agent that can use AI models from several companies, not only one. You pick the model that fits each task, its quality and its price.
Models differ. One is strong at long reasoning, another is quick and inexpensive for routine edits, a third reads large files well. Prices differ just as much. An agent tied to one company gives you that company's answer to every question. A multi-model agent lets you choose.
Why model choice matters
- Fit per task. A planning step and a rename across fifty files do not need the same model.
- Cost per task. Routine steps can run on a lower-priced model; hard ones on the strongest.
- A second opinion. Ask another company's model to review a change.
- Less lock-in. When a new model is better, you can use it without changing tools.
- Company rules. Some teams must use a particular provider.
Model-agnostic coding agent: not tied to one company
A model-agnostic coding agent is built so that the agent does not depend on any one model company. The tools, the prompts and the controls stay the same whichever model you choose. "Multi-model" says you can use several; "model-agnostic" says the agent is designed that way from the start. In practice the two words describe the same kind of tool.
The trade-off: an agent built by a model company is tuned for that company's models. A model-agnostic agent gives up a little of that tuning in exchange for choice.
How Mel does it
- Five model families in one terminal: Claude, GPT, Gemini, DeepSeek and Qwen.
- Same tools, same approvals, whichever model is working.
- Your keys or Mel's credits. Free with your own key per provider, or hosted credits across all five on Pro, Max or Business.
How the options compare
| Single-company agent | Open source model-agnostic agent | Mel | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Models | One company's | Many providers, you set up each | Claude, GPT, Gemini, DeepSeek, Qwen |
| Tuned for one model | Yes | No | No |
| Your own API key | Varies | Yes | Yes, free |
| Hosted credits across providers | No | Some offer a gateway | Pro, Max, Business |
| Team of agents on one task | Varies | Varies | Yes |
How to choose models in practice
- Start with one strong model for everything, so you learn the agent.
- Move routine steps (renames, formatting, simple tests) to a lower-priced model and compare.
- Keep the strongest model for planning and hard bugs.
- Run the same task on two models before you decide.
FAQ
What is a multi-model coding agent? A coding agent that can use AI models from several companies, so you pick the right one per task.
What is a model-agnostic coding agent? A coding agent built so it does not depend on one model company: the same tools and controls whichever model you choose.
Which models does Mel work with? Claude, GPT, Gemini, DeepSeek and Qwen.
Do I need an account with each provider? Not if you use hosted credits on Pro, Max or Business. With your own API key, Mel is free and you pay the provider.
Is a model-agnostic agent worse than one built for a model? Not in general. It may be less tuned for one model, and it lets you use whichever model does the task best.
