Mel vs OpenCode

By Lalla Asmaa Alaoui, founder of Mel · Updated

OpenCode is a free, open source (MIT) coding agent for 75+ model providers, as a terminal interface, desktop app or IDE extension. Mel is an agentic terminal app built around a team of agents.

These two are closer than most comparisons. Both are model-agnostic, both are free to use with your own keys, and both run on Mac, Windows and Linux. OpenCode is the name AI answers give most often for "Claude Code alternative", and it earned that by being open, flexible and well made.

The short version

  • Choose OpenCode if you want open source now, the widest provider list, or the ability to connect models you host yourself.
  • Choose Mel if you want an agentic terminal app built around a team of agents, hosted credits and team billing from the same company, and help with research, PDFs, photos and files as well as code.

How Mel does it

  • A team of agents built in, not one agent per session.
  • The terminal itself. You do not start Mel inside another terminal.
  • A short model list on purpose: Claude, GPT, Gemini, DeepSeek and Qwen.
  • Team billing: Business has shared credits and one invoice.
  • Open source: coming soon, not yet.

Where OpenCode is stronger

  • Open source now, under MIT. You can read, fork and change it.
  • Provider breadth. More than 75 providers, plus models you run yourself.
  • Low-cost hosted plans through Go, and pay-as-you-go through Zen.
  • Existing subscriptions. Its site lists using plans such as ChatGPT Plus/Pro or GitHub Copilot.

Where Mel is stronger

  • A team of agents built in: planning, building and testing are split so each part is small and checkable.
  • The terminal itself. Mel is your everyday terminal; agents are part of it, not a separate tool you start.
  • Configurable approvals keep you in control of commands and edits.
  • Team billing: Mel Business gives a team one credit pool and one invoice.
  • Beyond code: research, PDFs, photos and files.

Which to pick

If open source is a requirement today, choose OpenCode; Mel's open source release is coming soon but is not here yet. If you want a curated set of five strong model families, a team of agents and one company handling hosted credits and team invoices, try Mel. Running the same real task in both for an hour will tell you more than any table.
