What is a good Claude Code alternative?
By Lalla Asmaa Alaoui, founder of Mel · Updated
A Claude Code alternative is a coding agent that does Claude Code's kind of work but also lets you use other companies' models. Mel is one: an agentic terminal that works with Claude, GPT, Gemini, DeepSeek and Qwen.
Claude Code is one of the best coding agents available, and it is built for Anthropic's Claude models. People look for an alternative for a few honest reasons: they want GPT, Gemini, DeepSeek or Qwen for some tasks, they keep reaching plan usage limits, they want to compare models, or their company standardises on another provider.
What to look for in an alternative
- Model choice: which model families, and can you switch easily?
- Agent quality: does it finish tasks and run the tests itself?
- Control: approvals you can configure for commands and edits.
- Pricing: your own API key, a plan with hosted credits, or both.
- Shape: a CLI in your terminal, an editor extension, or a terminal app.
- Open source: if that matters to you.
The main options
OpenCode is open source (MIT), works with 75+ providers, and runs as a terminal interface, desktop app or IDE extension.
Cline is open source (Apache 2.0) and runs in VS Code, JetBrains IDEs and a CLI, with your own API key.
Aider is open source (Apache 2.0), "AI pair programming in your terminal", working with many models.
Goose is open source (Apache 2.0), with a desktop app and CLI, and works with 15+ providers.
Codex CLI (OpenAI) and Gemini CLI (Google) are the other big-company terminal agents, each built around its maker's models.
Mel is an agentic terminal with a team of agents, working with Claude, GPT, Gemini, DeepSeek and Qwen.
How Mel does it
