What is a vibe coding app?
By Lalla Asmaa Alaoui, founder of Mel · Updated
A vibe coding app is a tool that lets you build software by describing what you want in plain language and steering the result. The AI writes most or all of the code, and you judge what comes back.
"Vibe coding" started as a half-joke for coding by feel: you say what you want, look at what comes back, say what is wrong, repeat. It has become a real way to build prototypes, internal tools and first versions, by developers and non-developers alike.
The kinds of vibe coding app
Browser app builders. You type an idea and get a running web app in the browser, with hosting included. Lovable and Replit are well-known examples. Fast and friendly; you work inside their platform.
AI code editors. You describe changes in an editor and see the code change. Cursor is a well-known example. Great when you want to see and shape the code.

Agentic terminals and coding agents. You describe the work and agents build, run and test it on your own computer, in your own project folder. More setup, more control, and the code is in your folder from the start.
How to vibe code without regret
- Describe the outcome, not the code. "A page where I can paste a CSV and see a chart" beats "write a React component".
- Iterate in small steps. One feature at a time, check it, then the next.
- Ask for tests early. They keep step 10 from breaking step 3.
- Use version control. Commit every working step, so a bad turn costs minutes, not hours.
- Know where the code lives. If you may move off a platform later, start where the code is yours.
- Get a review before real users. Security, data handling and payments deserve a human look.
How Mel does it
You describe what you want; the agents write the code in your project folder, run it and test it, and you steer.
- Your code lives in your folder, under your own version control.
- Tests come with the build: the team of agents plans, builds, tests and ships.
- You decide what runs. Configurable approvals cover commands and edits.
- Free to start with your own API key; Pro and Max add hosted credits.
Mel is a better fit for people who want to own and run their code than for someone who wants a one-click hosted site.
